After my Birthday

We did school work with the kids then left to empty the RV tanks and go to my surfing lesson.

The weather conditions were awesome for an experienced surfer but a brutal challenge for a beginner like me.

My lesson took about 1.5 hours and after that I spent another hour trying to get it right. In total I managed to stand up on a wave for a grand total of 2.4 seconds over 3 difference ride. I was not be able to stick popping up and would fall off the board right away.

Surfing was fun and definitely something I want to try again. Sorry I don’t have any photos from my thrashing.

Sunday we left the East coast and started to head West. Nothing major, just a 100km to Ocala Florida which is a nice city. We went to a park and the kids had a lot of fun playing on the different play structures.

The good news is that I am not too sore after surfing yesterday. I am ready for my next challenge soon.

Monday was back to school work for the kids. Mariana got up early and did laundry and we had some other household items to handle before getting to work. I felt like I was behind the power curve for the whole day. A lot of our activities took a lot more energy than they should have normally. I am having a hard time figuring out a specific reason but it is something I want to fix for tomorrow.

In the afternoon we took the kids to the Ocala public library which has a very nice children’s area. The kids enjoyed themselves and Katia got lots of reading done. When I read to the other kids I find that I get very tired and have to fight to stay awake.

After the library we walked around a veterans memorial park and the kids ran around a bunch. I find they are much easier to deal with when they have burnt off some of their energy.

This day went better. I got up early and went out and worked out. That set me on the right path for the day.

I was surprised how many people slept in their cars at Walmart. I counted 6 sedans that had towels hanging out the windows which indicated someone is sleeping inside. They hang the towel out the window and roll it up for privacy. Then they put a sunshade in the front dash for further privacy. But you can see the condensation on the window so you know someone slept in there.

It is an eye open because you start to see the hidden homeless. I am sure many of these people don’t want to sleep in a cramped car seat for the night but they have no other choice.

I am appreciating the comfort of our RV more.

This afternoon we stopped at a mechanic and got the muffler on the generator repaired. I want to have the generator operational to top up the batteries and so that we have 120V power occasionally. Now that the generator is running we are becoming more self sufficient. I hope that when we get to Utah and other parts of the country that we will be able to survive off grid for longer periods of time.

Good night. It is now 5C and may be -1C tomorrow morning. I didn’t think Florida would get this cold.

  1. I find that if I do voices I get less tired while reading. I have a lot of fun with making up different voices for the characters 🙂

On a more serious note, some people live in their car for adventure, but many are indeed homeless. The number of invisible young homeless people is larger than we think.
